Meet the Maker: Kricklewood Farm Sunflower Oil

Dale Horeczy and Brad Daily of Kricklewood Farm

Every summer in the small town of Frankville, Ontario, the fields at Kricklewood Farm are filled with tall, cheerful sunflowers. Farmers Dale Horeczy and Brad Daily have been making cold-pressed sunflower oil here since 2012, with a commitment to organic farming practices. Originally from Winnipeg and after living for a spell in Atlanta, Dale and Brad returned to Ontario to settle on their 90 acre farm, complete with a classic Ontario stone house and timber-frame barn built in the 1850s.

Dale and Brad care about building closer connections between people and the food they consume. They found their niche in the local food market when the realized their land was highly suitable for growing sunflowers, and that there were no other local producers making sunflower oil. Sunflowers at Kricklewood Farm are grown from organic seed using natural farming methods, with no pesticides or herbicide. Dale and Brad grow highly oleic sunflower seed, resulting in a heart-healthy sunflower oil that tastes great. Oil is made in small batches, cold-pressed on a small screw press. Seeds are slowly squeezed without added heat and temperature is carefully monitored to ensure a high-quality oil is produced.

Today, Kricklewood Farm produces thousands of litres of oil each year, and has expanded their product line to include bread dippers, aiolis and infused oils.
